As many of us have experienced, back pain can play a major negative effect in our daily lives. It can remove time away from employment, interfere with a healthy balanced lifestyle and can influence physical or psychological stress.

The Science part
Your spine consists of a large number of ligaments and muscles that provide support as it stretches and contracts. Within it there are vertebrae discs, that are tough but surround a softer core which provides a good combination for supporting, whilst absorbing the knocks and shocks of normal daily activities.
Nerves are attached to the spinal cord through small holes between each disk that connect to the brain, with every part of the body. These nerves are prone at high risk as they leave the spinal chord to reach the brain and are prone to irritation, especially if one of the vertebrae they pass is damaged.
Contributing factors
It can in many cases be hard to identify a single cause for the back pain but the following factors may pose an influential reason for its development:
- Previous back pain
- Carrying excess weight
- Smoking
- Physical work
- Twisting and lifting incorrectly
- Static postures
- Stress and depression
- Job dissatisfaction

Reduce the impact
A large percentage of you can prevent the further development or reduce the impact of back pain by simple precautions such as:
- Do not ignore any pain – while doing any activity e.g. exercise or even taking the dog for a walk, it is a warning sign that you may be moving incorrectly; the sooner the find the problem the faster you can correct it.
- Exercise – Moving and partaking in exercise is vital to keep your body not only in good shape, but helps to improve strength and mobility.
- Regular stretching – several times a week, allow a small amount of time available for stretching out tired muscles. This will ensure that stiffness is reduced and that your body is naturally more flexible.
- Sleeping position and posture – correct form here is vital. Equipment such as chairs and mattresses can make a big difference. It is suggested that sleeping on your back or side with straight legs can stretch out the spine and increase sleep quality.
